“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
There’s no denying that we are living in a time of uncertainty and disparity. Between the political dissonance among the American people today and the increased and ongoing cries for social justice, this disparity weighs heavily on all of us. However, even in difficult times, there’s opportunity to be a positive force for good.
As we take time today to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we are reminded that he dedicated his life to being a positive force for good. Throughout the Civil Rights Movement, he remained a powerful but peaceful voice of reason, inspiration and advocacy. Inspired by his teachings, FranFund seeks to be a light during a time of challenge and controversy. We remain steadfast in our commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) within our business and wherever we can create positive change in those around us.
To this end, in 2020, FranFund held a town hall with FWMBCC president & CEO Devoyd “Dee” Jennings, where we had a frank and open discussion about the barriers facing the Black community, as well as things we can do to improve, both as individuals and as an organization. Mr. Jennings reminded us that, “We won’t make progress if we stay in our comfort zones. The only way to get things started it to get uncomfortable."
Our company town hall with Mr. Jennings was, at times, emotional and uncomfortable, but uncomfortable conversations are often the gateway to progress. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. proved this statement to be true. He was no stranger to tough conversations. Whether he was marching for social justice, urging peace for the restless in the pulpit, or advocating for the oppressed, he yielded influence through his actions. He fought to level an incredibly uneven playing field. His achievements are still felt today.
At FranFund, we believe that in our own way, we help level the playing field by providing opportunities for all people to further themselves through business ownership and growth. If business ownership is your dream, we can help you make it a reality and we will stay with you by your side through the process.
Moved by what our nation is experiencing today, and inspired by the grace and dignity of Dr. King, we wanted to show our heartfelt appreciation for the difference he made in the world. FranFund has added MLK Day as an official holiday for employees. We encourage our team - and everyone - to not be satisfied with the progress of the last 50 years, but to seek opportunities for growth when it comes to social injustice and all forms of discrimination. Whether it’s a civil conversation with someone with opposing views, or a service act that inspires unity, we remind you that stepping out of our comfort zones can lead to progress and understanding. Please join us, this day and every day.
